New York Bistro On Christmas Day
Merry Christmas To ALL!
I attempted a similar shot a couple of days earlier, but when I framed the composition, I truncated the word 'LUNCH' on the awning to the left of the photo. Details like that annoy me, so I went back on Christmas night to reshoot while carefully watching the edges of the frame.
I try to be cognizant of composition-wrecking details, but it's tricky when you're shooting at night. Small details are easily overlooked in the dark. Sometimes, you don't notice a problem until you load the files onto the computer. If at first you don't succeed, charge your batteries, swallow your pride, get back out there, and make it right.

NYC in Black and White - Fire Escape
Endangered Architecture
Fire escapes fascinate me with their functional elegance, art with a noble purpose.
Unfortunately, we are losing these lovely Twentieth-Century buildings. They are being torn down at an alarming rate, replaced with bland modern towers fitted with internal fire stairs. The look of these elegant brick and iron façades will one day be a thing of the past. We have to enjoy them now.

Sea Birds Hunting On The Florida Coast
Wading In Formation
I was struck by how the birds would wade along the shoreline together in groups of two or three with nearly perfect synchronization of movement. They stepped together, dipped their beaks into the we sand together. Even their posture was mirrored almost perfectly.

Hectic Travel
It happens. You're dashing along trying to keep up with a travel companion who's determined to get to a museum by some pre-decided hour. Along the way, you spot something that's too visually interesting to pass up.

Young Woman In An Evening Gown
Sisters At An Exhibition
I am proud to announce that my sister, Laurie, has had one of her oil paintings selected for display in a juried exhibition at the historic Merrick Art Gallery in Western Pennsylvania.
It was an honor to be there for the successful and well-attended opening. My other two sisters were on hand, as well (a full set!). We live far apart and don't see each other very often; being together at the opening made occasion all the more special.

Lighting Test - High Key With Soft Edges
Creating A Dreamlike Quality
The soft, minimally directional lighting was created with one off-camera flash bounced in a white room.
I opened the lens to its widest aperture to accentuate the dreamlike quality of the image. The subject was placed on a folded bedspread. With most of the bedspread out of focus, it looks like a cloud.
I'm hoping that the subject liked the photo. She didn't say anything about it, either way, but I'm fairly confident. When it comes to lighting, we don't toy around.
